Korean clinical research behind modern HA penile augmentation
Korean Clinical Research Behind Modern HA Penile Augmentation
Much of the modern clinical literature on hyaluronic acid (HA) penile augmentation comes from Korean teams. The timeline below traces that work — from early feasibility studies to a randomized comparison and a regional consensus — and is followed by what it does, and does not, establish.
- 2003Early human study
Early human HA glans studies
Korean researchers reported early human experience using injectable HA for glans augmentation and explored anatomical feasibility.
- 2008Follow-up study
Five-year glans follow-up
A Korean follow-up study reported persistent effects with partial volume reduction over five years in selected patients.
- 2011Clinical study
HA penile-shaft girth enhancement
A Korean clinical study evaluated injectable HA for penile-shaft girth enhancement.
- 2018Physician survey
Korean real-world practice survey
A survey of Korean urologists described accumulated experience with 4,344 HA glans procedures for selected premature-ejaculation patients. This was a physician-recall survey, not a controlled clinical trial.
- 2020Randomized trial
Multicenter randomized HA vs PLA trial
A patient- and evaluator-blinded Korean randomized trial compared temporary HA and PLA penile augmentation. At 24 weeks, average girth increase was 2.1 cm for HA and 1.6 cm for PLA, with no serious adverse events reported.
- 2021Retrospective study
Complication study
A Korean-affiliated retrospective study described complications and management following HA penile augmentation, including nodules, bleeding, and infection.
- 2023Consensus statement
APSSM consensus
The Asia-Pacific Society of Sexual Medicine emphasized objective assessment, psychological and physical evaluation, realistic expectations, specialist expertise, and the lack of complete procedural standardization.
What this research supports
- HA can temporarily increase penile girth.
- HA is more reversible than permanent fillers.
- Patient satisfaction can improve in selected men.
- Technique, volume, product, and follow-up matter.
What it does not prove
- That every patient should have treatment
- That Korean treatment is automatically superior
- A guaranteed number of centimetres
- Reliable erect-length enlargement
- Absence of serious complications
- A single internationally standardized protocol
